Mirage is a caching proxy server written at the University of New Mexico by Jonathan Helfman for AT&T Labs -Research. Mirage has been extended to describe its cache, parse HTML pages, and allow trusted applications to monitor it's request stream. Mirage was written entirely in Java and has been tested on IRIX, FreeBSD, Windows98 and Windows NT.

The name “mirage” serves as a reminder that a cache is just a representation of the Web.

Proxy servers were originally developed to run on firewalls so people on a LAN or intranet could obtain secure access to the Internet. Proxy servers were then extended to cache Web pages and images, saving them on a local disk in case they are requested again soon. A number of additional extensions have been proposed, such as annotation servers, full text indexers, subject-matter indexers, and protocol monitors (see Brooks et.al. 1995).
