Mandala Recursive Spiral Layout Mandala uses the Imago image server to compute layouts for thumbnail collections. |

Imago's layout algorithms position thumbnails of Web images. The spiral layout algorithms first rate thumbnails and position them in a space-preserving spiral with the highest-rated thumbnails in the center. | ![]() |
| Clusters of clusters may also be positioned recursively. For large thumbnail collections it is often possible to cluster the thumbnails in various ways, such as by their site of origin, the time they were accessed, or the user who accessed them. Then the thumbnails of each cluster can be positioned in their own space-preserving spiral. | ![]() |

Once each cluster has a spiral layout, it can each be assigned an aggregate rating. Once each cluster has an aggregate rating the entire spiral cluster is treated as a thumbnail and the spiral layout algorithm is used again to position the clusters. |

Many different rating aggregation schemes are possible. Rating clusters by their total number of thumbnails, for example, causes clusters with the most thumbnails to be positioned near the center. |
